Hi! My name is Marissa Roberge, and I’m a senior at Colgate University. I’m a Peace and Conflict Studies major and Anthropology minor.

I have always been interested in the realities of ecotourism and the commodification of the environment. My international travel experiences, particularly in Australia’s national parks, opened my eyes to the exploitative nature of a practice I had always considered ‘green’ and ‘sustainable.’ Continuing to explore this issue alongside concepts of power and privilege has been enlightening. I hope readers find the information just as informative, and I encourage them to continue to learn about and question the legitimacy of ecotourism’s claim of sustainability.

I’m really interested in the dynamic between the environment and commercialism. This research has taught me about the relationship between ecotourism and commercialization, and the resulting consequences that leave the environment in a poor state. I hope that this page has helped open people’s eyes to the importance of mindfulness while touring and visiting natural environments.
