In 2007, China overtook the U.S. to become the top global emitter of greenhouse gases (Adam, 2007)
Since then, international pressure on China to ramp up mitigation efforts and “do their part” — despite their historically minimal contributions to anthropogenic climate change — has increased.
Today, China is slowly and steadily working to lower their emissions, and a significant component of these efforts includes the development of and transition to renewable energies.
Governmental policies and regulations regarding sustainable energy sources have been continually enacted and revised over the last decade, and China continues to explore and develop a variety of renewable sources including hydropower, wind power, solar power, and ocean energy.
